    A deformed analogue of Onsager's symmetry in the XXZ open spin chain

    The XXZ open spin chain with general integrable boundary conditions is shown to possess a q-deformed analogue of the Onsager's algebra as fundamental non-abelian symmetry which ensures the integrability of the model. This symmetry implies the existence of a finite set of independent mutually commuting nonlocal operators which form an abelian subalgebra. The transfer matrix and local conserved quantities, for instance the Hamiltonian, are expressed in terms of these nonlocal operators.     Comment on the Generation Number in Orbifold Compactifications

    There has been some confusion concerning the number of (1,1)(1,1)-forms in orbifold compactifications of the heterotic string in numerous publications. In this note we point out the relevance of the underlying torus lattice on this number. We answer the question when different lattices mimic the same physics and when this is not the case. As a byproduct we classify all symmetric ZNZ_N-orbifolds with (2,2)(2,2) world sheet supersymmetry obtaining also some new ones.Comment: 28 pages, 9 figures not included, available in postscript at reques

    Anticancer Activity and Cisplatin Binding Ability of Bis-Quinoline and Bis-Isoquinoline Derived [Pd2L4]4+ Metallosupramolecular Cages

    New bis-quinoline (Lq) and bis-isoquinoline-based (Liq) ligands have been synthesized, along with their respective homoleptic [Pd2(Lq or Liq)4]4+ cages (Cq and Ciq). The ligands and cages were characterized by 1H, 13C and diffusion ordered (DOSY) NMR spectroscopies, high resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HR-ESIMS) and in the case of the bis-quinoline cage, X-ray crystallography. The crystal structure of the Cq architecture showed that the [Pd2(Lq)4]4+ cage formed a twisted meso isomer where the [Pd(quinoline)4]2+ units at either end of the cage architecture adopt the opposite twists (left and right handed). Conversely, Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations on the Ciq cage architecture indicated that a lantern shaped conformation, similar to what has been observed before for related [Pd2(Ltripy)4]4+ systems (where Ltripy = 2,6-bis(pyridin-3-ylethynyl)pyridine), was generated. The different cage conformations manifest different properties for the isomeric cages. The Ciq cage is able to bind, weakly in acetonitrile, the anticancer drug cisplatin whereas the Cq architecture shows no interaction with the guest under the same conditions. The kinetic robustness of the two cages in the presence of Cl− nucleophiles was also different. The Ciq cage was completely decomposed into free Liq and [Pd(Cl)4]2− within 1 h. However, the Cq cage was more long lived and was only fully decomposed after 7 h. The new ligands (Liq and Lq) and the Pd(II) cage architectures (Ciq and Cq) were assessed for their cytotoxic properties against two cancerous cell lines (A549 lung cancer and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer) and one non-cancerous cell line (HDFa skin cells). It was found that Lq and Cq were both reasonably cytotoxic (IC50S ≈ 0.5 μM) against A549, while Ciq was slightly less active (IC50 = 7.4 μM). Liq was not soluble enough to allow the IC50 to be determined against either of the two cancerous cell lines. However, none of the molecules showed any selectivity for the cancer cells, as they were all found to have similar cytotoxicities against HDFa skin cells (IC50 values ranged from 2.6 to 3.0 μM)

    For each finite subgroup G of SL(n, C), we introduce the generalized Cartan matrix C_{G} in view of McKay correspondence from the fusion rule of its natural representation. Using group theory, we show that the generalized Cartan matrices have similar favorable properties such as positive semi-definiteness as in the classical case of affine Cartan matrices (the case of SL(2,C)). The complete McKay quivers for SL(3,C) are explicitly described and classified based on representation theory

    Multi-particle structure in the Z_n-chiral Potts models

    We calculate the lowest translationally invariant levels of the Z_3- and Z_4-symmetrical chiral Potts quantum chains, using numerical diagonalization of the hamiltonian for N <= 12 and N <= 10 sites, respectively, and extrapolating N to infinity. In the high-temperature massive phase we find that the pattern of the low-lying zero momentum levels can be explained assuming the existence of n-1 particles carrying Z_n-charges Q = 1, ... , n-1 (mass m_Q), and their scattering states. In the superintegrable case the masses of the n-1 particles become proportional to their respective charges: m_Q = Q m_1. Exponential convergence in N is observed for the single particle gaps, while power convergence is seen for the scattering levels. We also verify that qualitatively the same pattern appears for the self-dual and integrable cases. For general Z_n we show that the energy-momentum relations of the particles show a parity non-conservation asymmetry which for very high temperatures is exclusive due to the presence of a macroscopic momentum P_m=(1-2Q/n)/\phi, where \phi is the chiral angle and Q is the Z_n-charge of the respective particle.Comment: 22 pages (LaTeX) plus 5 figures (included as PostScript), BONN-HE-92-3

    Low Detection Rates of Genetic FH in Cohort of Patients With Severe Hypercholesterolemia in the United Arabic Emirates

    Background: Programs to screen for Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) are conducted worldwide. In Western societies, these programs have been shown to be cost-effective with hit/detection rates of 1 in 217–250. Thus far, there is no published data on genetic FH in the Gulf region. Using United Arab Emirates as a proxy for the Gulf region, we assessed the prevalence of genetically confirmed FH in the Emirati population sample. Materials and Methods: We recruited 229 patients with LDL-C >95(th) percentile and employed a customized next generation sequencing pipeline to screen canonical FH genes (LDLR, APOB, PCSK9, LDLRAP1). Results: Participants were characterized by mean total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) of 6.3 ± 1.1 and 4.7 ± 1.1 mmol/L respectively. Ninety-six percent of the participants were using lipid-lowering medication with mean corrected LDL-c values of 10.0 ± 3.0 mmol/L 15 out of 229 participants were found to suffer from genetically confirmed FH. Carriers of causal genetic variants for FH had higher on-treatment LDL-c compared to those without causal variants (5.7 ± 1.5 vs 4.7 ± 1.0; p = 3.7E-04). The groups did not differ regarding high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, body mass index, blood pressure, glucose, and glycated haemoglobin. Conclusion: This study reveals a low 7% prevalence of genetic FH in Emiratis with marked hypercholesterolemia as determined by correcting LDL-c for the use of lipid-lowering treatment. The portfolio of mutations identified is, to a large extent, unique and includes gene duplications. Our findings warrant further studies into origins of hypercholesterolemia in these patients. This is further supported by the fact that these patients are also characterized by high prevalence of type 2 diabetes (42% in the current study cohort) which already puts them at an increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. These results may also be useful in public health initiatives for FH cascade screening programs in the UAE and maybe the Gulf region

    Dynamics of heteropolymers in dilute solution: effective equation of motion and relaxation spectrum

    The dynamics of a heteropolymer chain in solution is studied in the limit of long chain length. Using functional integral representation we derive an effective equation of motion, in which the heterogeneity of the chain manifests itself as a time-dependent excluded volume effect. At the mean field level, the heteropolymer chain is therefore dynamically equivalent to a homopolymer chain with both time-independent and time-dependent excluded volume effects. The perturbed relaxation spectrum is also calculated. We find that heterogeneity also renormalizes the relaxation spectrum. However, we find, to the lowest order in heterogeneity, that the relaxation spectrum does not exhibit any dynamic freezing, at the point when static (equilibrium) ``freezing'' transition occurs in heteropolymer. Namely, the breaking of fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT) proposed for spin glass dynamics does not have dynamic effect in heteropolymer, as far as relaxation spectrum is concerned.
